If you’re like me, that time of the month hits like a wrecking ball. Cramps, bloating, random cravings, and the constant fear of leaks. Not exactly a vibe.

But over the years, I’ve picked up some seriously helpful tricks that make my period way more manageable and way less miserable.

I’m sharing some of my favorite period hacks that have made that time of the month a little easier. Whether you deal with cramps, leaks, or just general discomfort, these tips might help you out.

How to Manage Periods - Period Secrets + Tricks

1. Heat Is Your Best Friend

First up: heating pads. If you’re like me and get awful cramps, a heat source on your stomach is a game-changer.

I use this little microwaveable bean bag thing, but a hot water bottle or heated blanket works just as well.

The warmth helps relax your muscles, which tend to spasm during your period. Seriously, I can’t even explain how much better I feel with the heat.

2. Cover Your Butt (Literally)

This one’s a biggie wear long shirts, sweaters, or cardigans that cover your butt when you’re on your period.

I don’t know about you, but whenever I’m wearing a pad, I get so paranoid that everyone can see it through my leggings or yoga pants. I’ll literally be walking around thinking, “Why is everyone staring at my butt?!” even though they’re probably not.

It just gives you peace of mind, knowing no one can tell you are wearing a pad.

3. Find a Massage Buddy

Another lifesaver is having a friend who gives good massages. When it’s that time of the month, a little TLC goes a long way. Your back gets super tight, and a quick rubdown feels like heaven.

I remember in school, we used to do these “massage trains” at lunch where everyone massaged the person in front of them. If I ever saw one, I’d immediately join.

If you have a friend (or a partner) willing to give you a back rub during your period, keep them close.

4. A Healthy(ish) Snack for Cravings

Cravings during periods are normal. Having a snack that satisfies cravings without making you feel gross.

I like to eat sliced bananas with drizzled chocolate and a sprinkle of cereal.

It’s so simple, and you can even freeze it for a cold treat. (Fun fact: Cold foods are actually supposed to help with period discomfort!)

5. The Towel Trick

If you’re worried about leaks at night, put a towel on your bed. When you’re sleeping, you move around a lot, and sometimes, leaks happen.

A towel is an easy way to make sure nothing gets on your sheets.

6. Code Names with Friends

This one’s just for fun. Mostly, girls have code names for their periods with their friends.

One of the funniest ones I’ve seen is “Japan is attacking—do you have supplies?” (Because, you know, the Japanese flag is a white background with a red dot.)

I think that’s hilarious and such a cute way to talk about it with your squad.

7. Keeping Your Pad Secure

Last but definitely not least, keep your pad in place. I recently discovered panty prop underwear, and it’s amazing. It’s designed to hold your pad securely so it doesn’t shift around, which is perfect if you’re active (like in gym class, dance, or sports).

A lot of girls tell me they don’t like tampons or are scared to use them, so this is a great alternative.

Plus, since it doesn’t have wings, it’s super subtle if you’re changing in a locker room. Just remember to change it every few hours like a regular pad!
