Hi love, I hope everything is going well! On this page, you will be reading about some of my top period care tips that will help you feel clean and fresh, even during that time of the month.

Every girl goes through this every single month, and it shouldn’t be a topic we feel ashamed of. I think talking about these things should be completely normal.

Top Period Care Tips to Stay Fresh and Comfortable During Your Cycle

Top Period Care Tips to Stay Fresh and Comfortable During Your Cycle

1. Shower Twice a Day During Your Period

Regular showers during your period are extremely necessary to prevent unwanted odor and reduce the risk of infections.

I prioritize this tip, especially in the first three days of my period, when the flow tends to be heavier. I usually shower in the morning and again before bed to keep myself clean throughout the day.

When washing your body, it’s best to use gentle, unscented soap. While it might be tempting to use fragrant soaps during this time, they can disrupt your pH balance. Stick to unscented options for your intimate areas, but feel free to use scented soaps on other parts of your body.

2. Wear Lightweight, Breathable Underwear

Tight fabrics can trap moisture and heat, creating an environment where germs thrive and irritation occurs. On the other hand, breathable fabrics like cotton allow heat to flow, reducing odors and keeping you comfortable.

If your clothes get stained during your period, here’s a quick tip: rinse the stain immediately with cold water before it sets. For older stains, rinse with cold water, apply a mix of baking soda and soap, let it sit for five minutes, rinse again, and wash as usual.

For the underwear I use during my period, I always rinse them with cold water before washing them separately from my regular clothes. Trust me, never wash them together!

3. Drink Hibiscus Tea to Ease Cramps and Bloating

If you experience terrible cramps and bloating as I do, drinking hibiscus tea at least once a day during your period can help tame these uncomfortable feelings. Hibiscus tea is rich in vitamin C, which supports cell turnover and helps things flow more smoothly, making your period less painful.

Brew two cups of water with three tablespoons of hibiscus flowers, let it sit for two minutes until it turns a beautiful color, and drink it throughout the day. This tea works wonders for reducing cramps, bloating, and body aches, while also putting me in a positive state. Plus, it’s delicious!

Drinking hibiscus tea also supports good period care by helping to flush out the urinary tract, and keeping everything clean and flowing something that’s extremely important during your period.

4. Change Menstrual Products Regularly

It’s crucial to change your menstrual products every three to six hours, whether you use pads, tampons, menstrual cups, or something else. This helps maintain healthy period care habits, prevents infections or rashes, and gets rid of accumulating odors.

  • Sanitary pads: Change every two hours, even if the flow is light.
  • Tampons: Change every four to six hours, and never go more than eight hours without changing them. Always double-check you’ve removed the old one before inserting a new one.
  • Menstrual cups: Clean them daily after use.

When disposing of menstrual products, wrap them in toilet paper or the bag they came in, and toss them in the trash. Never flush them down the toilet. I learned this the hard way, and it caused a lot of problems at home.

5. Change Your Bed Sheets and Towels Every Three Days

During your period, your bed sheets and towels can become a breeding ground for bacteria. If not cleaned properly, they can develop fungus, which can easily transfer to your body.

To avoid this, change your sheets and towels every three days while you’re on your period. This simple habit ensures you stay clean and hygienic throughout your cycle.

6. Use a Heating Pad for Pain Relief

Menstrual cramps happen when the muscles of your uterus contract, which typically occurs before and during your period.

Applying a heating pad can provide pain relief by increasing blood flow and delivering oxygen to your abdominal muscles, helping them relax.

I place the heating pad on my lower abdomen or lower back, making sure not to put it directly on my skin to avoid burns. Deep breathing and relaxation also help, even though it can be difficult during intense cramps.

7. Always Carry a Period Care Kit in Your Purse

As a busy girl, I always make sure to carry a period care kit in my purse. In this pouch, I keep wet wipes, extra menstrual products, spare undies, painkillers, and hand sanitizer.

  • If I have an accident, I can clean myself up with wet wipes and change into clean underwear.
  • I never run out of menstrual products since I always carry extras.
  • If there’s no toilet paper, I use wet wipes to clean or refresh myself.
  • If there’s no soap, I use hand sanitizer to stay clean and hygienic.

Before heading out, I double-check that I have everything I need. Trust me, this tip is a game-changer during your period.

8. Take Care of Your Skin During Your Period

During your period, your skin can become oily, leading to clogged pores. To combat this, I wash my face in the morning with a product that removes excess oil.

My go-to is the CeraVe cleanser, which exfoliates and helps keep my skin clear.
